If
you wish to protect your property from burglars, then you have to
think like them. Check all the entry points like doors and windows,
as well as any weakness in them. If you feel that a particular door
or window is susceptible to easy break-in, reinforce it.
Burglars
look for alarm systems and telephone systems first to cut the wires
and disable them. Conceal all alarm system wirings.
Whenever
you buy or rent a new home or property, change all the locks.
Install deadbolts wherever necessary.
If
the keys are lost, it is best to change the locks without any delay
or hesitation.
Hire
housecleaners, servants, gardeners and other temporary staff only
from reputed organisations and check the credentials of such staff,
including references.
Fire
escapes should have one-way doors, so that you can get out of the
buildings but others cannot enter from outside.
If
the property is going to be unoccupied for more than a day or two,
arrange for timers on the lights for switching them on and off in
cycles.
Dogs
are good security guarantees but guard dogs trained for property
protection will not be good pets. Home pet dogs are likely to be
noisy but still be effective. Burglars never wish to draw attention
to their activities.
If
you are going on vacation, inform the local police station about
your absence. If you have valuable assets in your premises, then
employ a security services firm to provide guard duty for that
period.
Always
insure your property and its assets for all risks, including
burglary, fire, vandalism, etc. The premiums that you pay will be
much cheaper than the loss if something untoward happens.
If
you are in business and face threat from competitors, then engage a
security services company that is competent to find out about the
competitors and their tactics. You need not resort to unethical
practices but you should be aware of them to protect yourself
against unscrupulous persons.
Screen
and vet all the staff employed by you. Never appoint anybody without
proper referrals and background checks.
